Overview

Chroma Design, Usability Design Specialist, has worked closely with 24 Hour Fitness® since 2001 on a variety of different projects including the design and implementation of multiple versions of their Web site, creation of a national on-line advertising campaign, design of a subsidiary company’s Web site, the design and implementation of various business applications, the creation of 12 monthly Flash promotions for their Web site, and a variety of other projects.

24 Hour Fitness® is a premiere health fitness center chain with more than 340 clubs. This leading business focuses on integrating fitness into its members lives. From it’s beginning in 1983 with one club, 24 Hour Fitness® has experienced phenomenal success and now has over 340 clubs and over three million members in 16 states in the USA and three other countries.

Process

Chroma Design advocates an user-centered and iterative design process. We take pride in involving our clients and their customers throughout the process. We craft custom solutions for each project and find unique and innovative solutions to our clients’ business needs. We always provide the best return on investment for our clients.

Throughout the various 24 Hour Fitness® projects we applied our unique user-centered process. While involved in usability-related work we performed analyses of existing user interfaces. Heuristic reviews we conducted to evaluate the UI against established usability guidelines. Our findings were documented and reported, and a usability matrix was drafted detailing our findings and recommendations. Ethnographic research was conducted to understand the environment in which the UI was used. Interviews were conducted with representative users to understand how they think of their work, their mental models, and what their needs were for the application at hand.

Design prototypes were developed using the information gathered from 24 Hour Fitness® users and team members. An iterative design cycle was engaged in which low fidelity prototypes progressed to highly refined working prototypes. A variety of different types of deliverables were made ranging from UI prototypes to Flash animations, on-line advertisements, and cutting-edge code. Chroma liaised with the 24 Hour Fitness® team and in some cases additional parties to ensure the proper implementation of our design solutions.

Results

In the course of working with 24 Hour Fitness®, Chroma Design provided real and substantial value. The greatest measure of our success was and continues to be our long-term engagement and the trust 24 Hour Fitness® provides us.

We have played a pivotal role in helping to establish this company’s on-line presence and to help extend its reach through a successful advertising campaign that resulted in substantial customer conversions among other metrics. Chroma Design successfully removed a variety of barriers to success in the use of 24 Hour Fitness® internal business applications by applying usability guidelines and practices in their redesign. Additionally, from a technical point of view Chroma Design assisted 24 Hour Fitness® by implementing state-of-the-art technical solutions to meet their business needs.
